Say you had ~40k USD, which car would you get? Jagwar F-type or Porch Cayman? Which one do you fea r more, British engineering or German complexity?
Or would you say screw it and just buy a new car?

All the V6 Mustangs.

Cayman. Haven’t driven an F-type, but the Cayman is a great car.

I’m so deeply fed up with fixing my car every other week that I’d get ANYTHING with a decent amount of warranty left. Barely used Mustang GT comes to mind.

F-Type because they’re pretty and make pretty noises.

there is also a suspect amount of Diesel Cayannes for sale on Autotrader

If you want British engineering, you know the deal. Go Mini. But if you want reliability go elsewhere

Porsche, all day long, though the Ja g is one sexy kitty.

F or 40k you could probably just squeeze into a new Mustang GT with the performance pack if you skip the doodads and geegaws.... I’d love a GT4, but they are going to run you lots more and I don’t really fit in the Cayman very well anyways... What does a lease return Grand Sport Vette run now days?

Between those two, Cayman.
If $40k fell into my lap right now and I had to buy a car; I’d be setting up test drives of new Focus RSes.

F-Type all day every day, especially after the kinks have been worked out by the first owner.

Cayman.
Not worried about German complexity here. The Cayman’s a pretty simple car. The motor is of the second-gen 9A1/ DFI generation. Very reliable.

I’d need to spend time behind the wheel of all three but would be very tempted by another British automaker.

The number of Ladas that money could buy...

40k? That's enough for like, 25 90s VWs.

The number of clapped out 300K on the odometer cars and parts cars that money would actually buy is accurately represented in your post.

I’d buy a new car for that much money, if I had to actually spend 40k or most of it

I have sufficient trust in CL that it would produce an interesting vehicle for $20K and the rest would easily be spent on mechanical improvements and gas.

If you want a pure driving car, then Cayman. If you want a beautiful car that is fun to drive and cruise in, but will be outpaced on a track t hen an F-Type. I went with the latter in orange and a manualn and couldn’t be happier.

You’re welcome!
Also, I’m sorry.
Although these are actually apparently holding up really well even as the early ones are approaching 10 years old , and with Jags being Jags and Porsches costing as much as they do to even just maintain/keep reliable the Lotus(in a very weird twist) could actually be the smart pick from a cost of ownership standpoint.

Like others have said Cayman. I know of a few people that daily 10 year old Caymans/Boxsters and they seem pretty damn reliable, and who doesn’t like the engine in the backseat.

Id be buying a very nice Powerstroke and nice car trailer. Then with the leftover a FZ09.

At that point I would stretch the budget a little bit and get a 996 Turbo.

Easy choice for me— Cayman. German cars are pretty straightforward to work on as long as you follow the instructions and torque everything to spec. British cars, on the other hand, are a bit more of a mess.

I’ve always liked the Cayman, and I’d probably take my chances on Porsche reliability. But the F-Type is seriously gorgeous, too.
